How a Tummy Tuck Repairs Separated Abdominal Muscles (Diastasis Recti)

When diastasis recti is part of the problem, a tummy tuck may help create a firmer, smoother abdominal contour.

At UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA, our board-certified plastic surgeons bring decades of experience in tummy tuck surgery and body contouring, including Dr. Mustafa AkyurekDr. Janice LalikosDr. Raymond Dunn, and Dr. Douglas Rothkopf.

What Is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti occurs when the two sides of the rectus abdominis muscles separate as the tissue between them stretches. Pregnancy is a frequent cause, although changes in weight and other factors can also contribute to abdominal laxaity.

You may notice a ridge or bulge through the center of your abdomen, particularly when you tighten your stomach muscles. For some people, physical therapy and specific core exercises can improve the separation. More significant cases may lead you to consider surgery.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Repair Diastasis Recti?

During a tummy tuck for diastasis recti, your plastic surgeon can tighten the connective tissue (fascia) over the abdominal muscles with sutures. This brings the separated muscles toward the midline and creates a firmer abdominal wall. The procedure can also remove excess skin and fat that may contribute to a loose or protruding abdomen.

Our tummy tuck procedure may be especially helpful when pregnancy has stretched the underlying abdominal tissues beyond the point where they naturally return to their previous position.

Can Exercise Fix Separated Abdominal Muscles?

Exercise and physical therapy can improve many cases of diastasis recti, so surgery isn’t automatically necessary. Certain exercises strengthen the deep abdominal muscles without placing excessive pressure on the separation.

When separation remains alongside loose skin or a persistent abdominal bulge, a surgical consultation can help you understand your options.
