Commonly known as a “nose job,” a rhinoplasty is one of the most popular procedures we perform at U Mass – and not just to improve the look of our patients’ noses. Sometimes rhinoplasty helps our patients breathe easier.
For many people, the very thought of undergoing any type of surgery comes with an amount of anxiety about the surgery itself and the recovery process. Continue reading to learn how to care for your nose following rhinoplasty:
Easy does it. You may feel like your old self again about a week following surgery, but the tissues of your nose are still healing and will be for a while. So, remember to be as gentle as you can with your nose during this time. For several weeks following your surgery we suggest that you:
•Avoid blowing your nose.
•Avoid vigorously washing your face, especially around your nose.
•Avoid contact sports or strenuous exercise.
•Avoid wearing glasses.
•Avoid pulling clothing over your head.
Change often – your bandages, that is. Following your rhinoplasty, you will have bandages inside and outside your nose. To avoid infection and ensure that your nose heals properly, it’s essential that you follow your surgeon’s directions and properly change the bandages as shown, paying close attention to using clean bandages inside of your nose.
No swimming. While your nose is healing from surgery, please avoid swimming for at least a few weeks up to a month after surgery. Not only can the pressure from jumping or diving into a pool put a lot of pressure on the inside and outside of your nose, chlorine is a no-no while your nose is healing.
What’s the take-away? Your optimum recovery from rhinoplasty is our goal and is also one of the most important parts of the procedure. If you are curious about rhinoplasty, would like to learn more or would just like to discuss your nose or breathing concerns, we invite you to call to schedule a consultation appointment, today.
