A sculpted and toned chest can bring confidence and a positive self-image. Even with rigorous exercise and a healthy diet, some men may still be left with overly large or disproportionate breasts. This is called gynecomastia and can affect men of all ages.
Generally, this is most common during adolescence and is attributed to hormonal changes. This usually subsides with age. However, surgery may be needed to get rid of the excess mass in the breast. Sometimes, the enlargement is only caused by excess fat, which can be removed with liposuction. Gynecomastia requires surgical removal of breast gland tissue to resolve.
Although male breast reduction surgery is a more invasive procedure that is performed under anesthesia, the recovery time is relatively short when compared to other surgeries. Rest and avoidance of strenuous activities are essential for the first few days and up to a week to not disrupt the initial healing process.
After about the second week, you can slowly increase the activity and intensity. As the healing process continues, some significant bruising and swelling may occur. This does not mean the procedure did not work and will subside over time.
Many patients report most of the discomfort and pain occurring during this time, but it can easily be controlled with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain medication. The swelling and bruising will continue to subside over the next few months, with the final results usually appearing around 6 months after the procedure.
Each patient is different, and the amount of fat and breast gland tissue removed will affect the recovery timeline and any restrictions that must be followed. However, breast reduction surgery is a safe and effective way to permanently get rid of excess fat or tissue in your chest.
