Dermal fillers are great treatment options to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and can also add volume to flattened lips or sunken areas on the face. Depending on your skin condition and aesthetic goals, the doctors and aestheticians at UMass Memorial Cosmetic Surgery Center will work with you and choose one of the three filler methods they offer.
For most patients, Radiesse or Restalyne injections provide great results, are proven safe, and have little to no downtime or recovery. Both are FDA-approved for use as dermal fillers in the face, and although they may provide similar results, there are slight differences in how they work.
Restalyne is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable filler that can be used nearly anywhere on the face. Once injected, the HA adds volume to the area by absorbing nearby water molecules. The amount of HA injected can be specifically customized to change how much volume is added to the treated areas. Depending on the area to be addressed, results can last between 6 and 18 months.
Radiesse is very similar in providing volume to targeted areas on the face. Instead of using HA to absorb nearby water, Radiesse is a specially formulated gel of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). Once the carrier gel breaks down, the CaHA stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin below the skin. The new collagen and elastin add volume and firm up the skin on treated areas on the face.
Although Radiesse cannot be as widely used as Restalyne, it is still very effective and a great option to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles. In general, the results from Radiesse injections last around 18 months. The results will depend on how much collagen and elastin growth is stimulated by the CaHA in your body.
Although HA is a molecule naturally found in the body, some patients prefer to avoid the injection of a foreign substance. As an alternative, lipo transfer, or the harvesting and use of fat from your own body, is available. Results of lipo transfer last about the same time as Restalye and Radiesse.
