The neck lift 101

Everyone dreads the signs of aging that can occur with time on the skin and body. One area of the face that can become problematic for both men and women as they age is that of sagging and loss of definition in the chin and jaw area. This can result in the formation of jowls and a “turkey neck” appearance. In cases like this, the doctors at UMass Memorial Medical Group can assist with surgical procedures such as the neck lift.

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift, which is medically referred to as a “lower rhytidectomy,” is a procedure performed to remove sagging, excess skin hanging underneath the chin and jowls. As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elastin which can keep the skin firm and tight. This sagging appearance can contribute to an aged appearance in many of our patients, making them feel self-conscious about their appearance. By removing excess skin and lifting it, the area can be tightened and patients will enjoy the elimination of their ”turkey neck.”

Who is a good candidate for the neck lift procedure?

There are various issues that can be resolved with the use of the neck lift procedure. Below are just a few of the concerns a qualified patient may have:

  • Horizontal bands across the neck
  • Excess fat deposits underneath the chin, known as “submental fullness”
  • Excess or loose skin along the jawline, known as “jowls”
  • Stretched or excess skin creating a “turkey wattle”
  • Stringy appearance to the neck caused by loosened platysma muscles

Patients best qualified for this procedure are those who are adult men and women in overall good mental and physical health with realistic expectations as to what can be achieved with plastic surgery.
