When you think about aging skin, your eyelids might not be the first area that pops into your mind. However, it’s one of the areas where natural skin elasticity loss can be the most impactful. Eyelid drooping can be especially frustrating for many people because it can affect both appearance and vision.
At UMASS Memorial Plastic Surgery in Worcester and Cape Cod, MA, our compassionate team treats every patient like family. We know how upsetting and stressful it can be when your appearance and vision both suddenly decline.
Our team takes the time to listen, understand your needs, and work with you to find a solution. Whether it’s a functional issue impacting your sight, a cosmetic concern, or both, eyelid surgery can dramatically improve how you see and feel.
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes loose skin and excess fat from the eyelids and tightens the surrounding muscles. Upper blepharoplasty repairs the upper eyelids from below your brows to just above your eye.
Lower blepharoplasty addresses the lower lids, including the skin beneath your lower lash line down to the very top of the cheeks.
How Can Eyelid Surgery Help With Vision Issues?
Eyelid surgery addresses problems that tend to happen with age, particularly:
- A decrease in elastin (the protein that provides skin elasticity)
- Decreased muscle tone
- Shifting of the fat pads around the eyes
These problems cause skin sagging, droopiness, and puffiness in the upper and lower lids.
The upper lids may start drooping, eventually creating a “hooded” look in which the upper eyelid isn’t visible. If the upper lids sag dramatically, they can cover part of your eye, decreasing your vision.
The lower lids can also sag significantly, in severe cases leading to dry eyes that can disrupt your vision.
Eyelid surgery can restore your upper or lower eyelids (or both) to normal positions and improve their muscle support system. This, in turn, can alleviate vision issues caused by skin sagging.
Alongside improved vision, eyelid surgery can give you a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
Signs You May Need Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery might help you if you have any of the following concerns.
- Excess Upper Eyelid Skin that interferes with your vision
- Sagging Lower Eyelids that create bags or puffiness
- Wrinkles and Creases around the eyes that contribute to a tired look
- Difficulty Applying Makeup to your upper eyelids due to excess skin
Our skilled surgeons at UMASS Memorial Plastic Surgery evaluate your concerns during consultation and explain your treatment options to help you decide if eyelid surgery is the right way to restore your vision. We can also help you protect your results after surgery with premium skin care.
