Wrinkles develop on your face for many reasons. In the past, men and women who wanted to look younger typically only had one option — extensive facelift surgery. Plastic surgeons who worked with these patients recognized that the disadvantages of the procedures outweighed the anti-aging benefits. By working with skin care researchers, cosmetic surgeons found a better solution with dermal fillers. Today’s facial fillers address common signs of aging, and each type of filler is designed to correct specific types of wrinkles.
Types of Wrinkles
You may develop wrinkles for many reasons, such as:
- Reduced levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid
- Poor fat volume
- Shifted fat
- Muscle contractions
- Sagging skin
Each of these factors create a different type of wrinkle, such as crow’s feet, smile lines, frown lines and marionette lines.
Restoring Facial Contours
The soft contours of your face are created by fat. As we age, we lose fat, and the fat can shift downward due to gravity. Facial fillers that add volume to the contours, such as the cheek area, give a lift that helps to soften wrinkles below the treatment area, such as the hollows of your cheeks.
Localized Wrinkles
Wrinkles that develop due as your body produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid are amongst the most common signs of aging that are remedied with facial fillers. The injectable products either contain hyaluronic acid or ingredients that stimulate natural collagen production. These types of fillers can be used around the nose and mouth to help with nasolabial folds, marionette lines and other concerns. An alternative to these types of fillers is to use small amounts of your own fat, or lipo transfer.
Dynamic Wrinkles
Each time that you use facial expressions, the muscles pinch your skin slightly. Young skin resists the force of the contractions by bouncing back in place. Older skin, though, has less elastin, so it develops creases, such as horizontal lines across the forehead. These types of wrinkles cannot be treated with dermal fillers. Instead, a neuromodulator must be used to relax the muscles.
