You are not alone if you have breast implants, are about to receive your first mammogram, and are concerned about your implants interfering with your screening. Saline and silicone implants can both affect a mammogram screening. However, radiology technicians can make adjustments and use special techniques to ensure they get the best views of the breast tissues, allowing a comprehensive exam for women with implants. Keep in mind that to the radiology technician, your safety, comfort and health are important considerations.
If you are considering implant surgery or have existing implants, here are five things to keep in mind when scheduling a mammogram:
- Do a bit of research to ensure that your mammography facility has experience imaging women with implants.
- Be sure to tell the facility and your technician about your implants, especially the details about them. Bring information about the type, placement, size, and shape of your implants to your appointment. Inform the facility that you have implants when you schedule your appointment and be sure to remind the technician when you arrive.
- Self-exams are crucial, especially if you have implants. If you see any changes to your breasts, contact your doctor immediately. Deciding on breast implant surgery means committing to being especially proactive about your breast health.
- Where your implants are placed is an important factor when it comes to mammography. Implants placed below the pectoral muscle are less likely to interfere with a clear view of breast tissue than implants placed above the muscle. This is additional information to share with the technician.
- If you are considering implants, discuss with your surgeon the possibility of getting a base-line mammogram prior to the procedure.
