face of beautiful woman touching her earTraditionally known as a surgery to correct protruding ears of children, otoplasty has been growing in popularity with adults to correct many cosmetic issues. This surgery is designed to flatten the outer ears. Otoplasty also aesthetically improves the position, proportion, and shape of the ear.

Otoplasty Benefits

The surgeons at UMass only use sophisticated technology to perform otoplasty for both adults and children.

Ear surgery corrects and refines unattractive contours of ears:

  • Disfigured ears
  • Protruding ears
  • Overly large ears – macrotia
  • Botched otoplasty
  • Congenital abnormalities

After otoplasty you’ll no longer feel the need to hide your ears from the world with hair styles or hats.

Otoplasty Procedure Basics

After a thorough review of your medical history and physical examination of the ears, your plastic surgeon at UMass will recommend an otoplasty procedure best suited for your needs and desires.

Anesthesia options:

On the scheduled date of surgery, the procedure is performed in our office under either local or general anesthesia. Your surgeon will recommend the best anesthesia option for you based on your health and the challenges of the otoplasty procedure.

Surgical technique:

Individual surgical techniques are used by UMass plastic surgeons to avoid an unnatural pinned back look.

Protruding ears are corrected by creating or increasing the rim of the ear (antihelical) and reducing enlarged conchal cartilage in the deepest and largest concavity of the external ear as follows:

  • Incisions are made on the back surface of the ear and front incisions are made within the ear’s folds to be hidden
  • Necessary amounts of cartilage and skin are removed to achieve the desired look
  • Permanent, internal sutures are put in place to secure the new shape of the cartilage in place during the healing process
  • External stitches are used to close incisions

Post-surgery entails:

A compressive dressing is applied and left in place for at least four days before being replaced by a constricting headband to be in worn for two weeks.

You should only experience mild bruising and minimal discomfort but should not resume normal activities until the compressive dressing removed.
